great food. Outstanding service. High quality. Best Chinese food in cedar rapids. most buffets I go to have low quality high quantities. This 1 definitely has high quality and good selection.

Ate at Pei's Chinese Restaurant for diner. I was actually looking for a good Chinese Buffet and stumbled across this place since it was across the street from my Hotel. Unfortunately there was no buffet for diner at Pei's (not sure about lunch). The group I was with ordered a variety of dishes. All the food was ok but nothing outstanding. The Orange chicken I ordered had to much sauce and when I substituted LoMein for my rice they sent out a bowl of plain egg noddles (no sauce no flavor). With other options in the area I wouldn't recommend Pei's for diner.

One of our favorite places to go for Chinese food. The spicy mongolian pork is excellent, it's on the lunch buffet but not on the menu, but you can still order it at dinner.

Pretty good restaurant. I've been eating at Pei's since they opened several years ago. The Mandarin Chicken is very good. The lunch buffet doesn't seem to have the same quality meat as the evening entrees do. If it weren't for the disparity in quality of food between lunch and dinner, I would have given them 5 stars. I'm not sure why they decided to get into the sushi bar business, I always thought their other menu items were just fine. I also found it peculiar that a place that specializes in Mandarin cuisine was trying to serve sushi and teppanyaki grill. Are they a Mandarin restaurant, or a Japanese restaurant? I kind of think they should have kept doing what they were good at. Anyhow, if you're in the area, give a try; especially at night when they get out the better cuts of meat.

This place used to be great. The Sunday buffet has gone down hill everything was cold and we came at 11am. Sushi is still great though. I am currently sitting at peis with my girlfriend for her birthday, the waitress walked right past our table with our empty drinks waiting to be filled. Another worker also walked past with a pitcher of water asking if we had water (we were drinking sprite) we said no, and instead of him picking up our cups to refill them, he just walked away. My girlfriend got up and walked over and filled our drinks for us with the employees just watching her. That's ridiculous service. We keep getting disappointed by peis every time we come back. Edit: I just had to get up and get my own box after waiting approximately 15 minutes...

I did the lunch buffet for take out today and it was not fantastic. Initially all was good- filled my container, got my soup, yada yada. I got up front to pay. $8.60 which seems VERY reasonable. For a take out order I was surprised to have to ask for a container for soup, chopsticks, sweet and sour sauce. No bag was offered so I carried all of these items out in the windy cold day certain I would lose something. And for the not so great at all! 3 crab rangoons and all were literally empty! nothing was inside. BUMMER- move onto main dish- 2 bites in I bit into a quarter sized bone in the breaded chicken. I'm not finished yet but really not excited to finish this lunch. UGH

Fairly busy for lunch time. I can see why. It's quick, a good value, and decent food. The buffet is lacking a lot of options. To be honest the selection is fairly limited. Because of this the food moves fast and is fresh. I usually prefer quality over quantity, however this place is OK. I would come back.

This place is great! We go there a lot and the waitress remembers you and is super friendly. Love the crab Rangoon's and the lunch buffet is great also.

I live downtown Denver where the culinary delights and diversity are difficult to match when i come to cedar rapids. But i have been coming this establishment for ten years, twice a year while on business. Best sushi in Cedar Rapids. Sit at the bar. Say hello to David. Get a glass of wine, miso, octopus salad, sashimi and ask what they recommend. They will always let you know what just arrived in that day. Sometimes they have Uni. Sometimes not. Solid integrity and friendly.

Remember, we are in Cedar Rapids, I remember eating at the Dragon Chinese Restaurant downtown, my recollection of that was my first introduction into Chinese food and it was great. Pei is very good too, good basic Chinese food, prepared competently, good service, clean restaurant. This is not the Chinese food of LA, San Francisco, or Chicago but it is good...

My family and I visited this place after reading the reviews and it has to be the worst place we have eaten at so far. My husbands shrimp tasted like it had been frozen when it was out in the fryer. I ordered chicken lo mein and the noodles were slimy and just all around bad! I would not recommend this place at all.

First off, Chinese food in Iowa seems a little different and doesn't taste as good as where I used to live. That said, Pei's was not that bad. I enjoyed my meal (sesame chicken) that I had for lunch. The price ($5.95) was great considering it came with soup, wonton, and a rangoon. I will be back for sushi.

Pei's has always been good to me, I usually get the orange shrimp and it has always been good like it was tonight the pot stickers were good and the won tons were OK. The group said the crab meat rangoon were good along with their entrees. The services was a little slow tonight but it was still overall a good trip!

Arguably the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. But, it's Cedar Rapids, so maybe it's a question of "whadda ya expect?" This place would not survive in a major metropolitan area.

  • Sara D.

Yes, a little run down on the inside BUT the best Zha jiang mian around, hands down. The crab meat rangoons are awesome and the sushi is some of the best in the area. The service can be somewhat slow but only because the staff is very friendly and cares to get to know their customers. If you like trying new things, ask about the Korean menu!

It's such a pity this place is so bad. I had really high hopes. There are a bunch of sushi/teppanyaki places in Cedar Rapids ( I swear they have just discovered sushi), and this place is by far the worst I've been to. First off, it's all broken up and ugly inside. I know the restaurant itself is at least 20 years old, but c'mon, at least fix up the slashed bench seats. Maybe touch up the paint on the walls? Speaking of the paint on the walls, dark gray? The entire restaurant was black and gray. Well, aside from the interrogation style lamps hanging way too close to the tables. Yuck. The whole place made me sad. On to the food. Oh gosh, the food. To start, my egg drop soup (which I was so looking forward to!). Egg drop soup is supposed to make you feel better when you're feeling down, it's all bright and yellow and tasty. Yeah, not at Pei's. At Pei's egg drop soup is some kind of salad suspended in a gray jelly like substance. It might have been not-yet-set jello. There were small pieces of crisp celery and carrots and onions suspended in the gelatinous substance they call soup. It was gross. Then came the entree, sweet and sour chicken. Now, you can't really go wrong with sweet and sour chicken. The only reason Pei's is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because the sweet and sour chicken was fairly good. Not the best, oh no, but it was ok. The service was pretty bad. I asked for my tea twice before getting it. The server just seemed to have too many tables to wait on. The place is pretty big, perhaps it was just a matter of too many tables for one person to wait on. The moral of the story is I will not be going back to Pei's. I will try every other Chinese place in Cedar Rapids before I will go back to Pei's.

The ambiance was a bit loud with a party in the corner and kids running around, but the food was tasty and the prices reasonable for dinnertime. The waitress seemed to have a little difficulty understanding us, but didn't make any mistakes so no complaints. It "hit the spot" for Chinese.

Might be best I'm town. But it's a very limited and low grade buffet. Friendly staff though...

Great food! Dave and Tom are awesome, such a great ambience. If you are thinking Asian think Peis!

I was pleasantly surprise as we entered Pei's, greeted with smiles and seated immediately! Tables are clean and spaced nicely without crowding. Immediately offered menus and iced water. Not rushed through our appetizers and meal. The egg rolls are chuck full of fresh vegetables and the Crab Rangoon are the best in Cedar Rapids. Our main courses were filling and provided enough for left overs. Great Plum wine. I would strongly recommend them in the Cedar Rapids area.

If you haven't been to Pei's in a couple years,,,,,it's NOT the same. That "great lunch buffet" is no longer great. It is half the size it used to be (we went on a Sunday) and the quality is very poor! For the price you are better off going over to Metro Buffet next door. They have great sushi, if that is what you want, and a HUGE buffet with lots of Chinese choices. They have triple the choices compared to Pei's AND you get dessert. Pei's was gross!

Last visit: Saturday, 2/27/2010, 6:30pm dinner for four. I've always been a big fan of Pei's Mandarin, but had only been to the NE locations until about a year ago (the NE location had shut down). I have since eaten at the SE location three times, in groups. With that said, Pei's is a great restaurant for group dining. Get several dishes to share. At an average of $8-$10 per entree, it is very reasonably priced. Generally speaking, one entree can feed two. Appetizers ($2-5): Whenever we go to Chinese restaurants, I like to order eggrolls, potstickers/dumplings, and crab rangoons. I am a big fan of the crab rangoons at Pei's. They are pretty loaded with cream cheese, which I like. The eggrolls and potstickers here are only so-so. Entrees ($8-10): I always get the Mongolian Beef dish ($9.25). This place is known for it and everyone I've eaten here with is a fan (both Asian and American). Another dish I like here, though it is more Chinese-American than Chinese, is the orange chicken. The chicken is larger than average here, I would say. An entree I would not recommend here are the lo mein noodles.. the noodles are the fat egg noodles and are rather bland. Other notes: - They have a great lunch buffet which has always been wildly popular. They always have crab rangoons, eggrolls, and two soups in addition to a handful of different entrees to choose from. - If you are looking for a Chinese dinner buffet (since this place does not do it), check out nearby "Metro Buffet," which is within a block. I don't like it as much, but a lot of people do. Overall a great restaurant with friendly service staff. They even have a special Korean menu upon request, and will even make off-menu dishes upon request. I like this place a lot and highly recommend it.

I was told that this is the best Chinese in CR so I had to try it. Unfortunately I was totally disappointed. While the restaurant was clean and service ok the food was horrible. My Mandarin Chicken had no flavor and was covered in enough thick sauce to take care of ten dinners. Save your money here and try Thai Moon instead.

At one time this place was a hit, but now it's just horrible. Catering to the Midwestern buffet feeding style has done this place no good. I am skeptical of buffets as a whole, and this place is why. The food was lousy. The service however was good, but not good enough to return. You can tell when inexperienced cooks are working because of the over use of hot spices to mask the flavor.... It doesnt really work. Chinese food should be natural tasting with a few dishes that are spicey, but everything is covered in hot spices. The egg drop soups smelled like dish water and was as cloudy. I couldn't taste the cashews in the cashew chicken, and wasn't even sure I was eating chicken because the spices were so overwhelming. This place is not recommended. Actually, I would never recommend an Asian food restaurant that serves buffet style.

The wait staff here is fantastic and very personable. They worked with my on food allergies (nut and shellfish) and the sushi was great and went with owner, Tom's recommendations. Looks to be a good lunch Buffett but haven't yet tried.... Usually stick to the sushi bar. Easy to find, quick food, always been treated fantastic. Will continue to come back.

Wow some of the worst Chinese food ever! Hot & Sour Soup was just weird. It was like Salt & Sour Soup couldn't eat it. Never seen it served with peas, carrots, chicken, and shrimp. BTW shrimp was bad tasting probably left over from the previous week. Pot stickers were odd as well. Supposed to be crispy outside soft inside these were the opposite. Oh and the hot tea, not sure what the heck it was maybe over brewed Lipton but one sip was enough for me! Even the fortune cookie was crap.

Very nice servers! They always make me and my company happy. I love Korean-Chinese style noodles and dishes in Pei's. You should try black bean paste noodle.

The sushi was very good. They personalized it for us since there were no vegetarian options on the menu which was very helpful and kind. I like the buffet very much, the variety of the buffet was great and the food was high quality. The buffet items were the same items that were on the menu, but for far less and with more variety. I can't comment on the on menu items but I would recommend the buffet and the off-menu sushi.

The location and atmosphere leave a bit to be desired but the food and service make up for the difference. I was immediately greeted when I arrived and sat at the Sushi Bar where I made great conversation with the chef. The sushi menu wasn't flashy but the ingredients were all fresh and handled professionally. Also was asked how spicy I like my rolls which was a new question for me at a sushi restaurant. Seems like a good place for locals to check out for sushi, but not sure about the buffet or dining experience.

I was very impressed with the good service and friendly wait staff. The egg drop soup was very good. I ordered several sushi rolls and singles. After waiting 30 minutes, I was not impressed. Nice presentation but the fish and rice did not taste fresh. It was not worth the money. It was obvious that others there were repeat customers and ordering off the menu.

Chow Mein - Meh. I've experienced better. Tasteless. If you don't want something to test your taste buds then get this. I got take out, the front desk was nice and I think I'll give it another try by getting something else on the menu.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
